Effectiveness and principles

Repellent principles and product differences

Do ultrasonic mosquito repellents really work?

Effectiveness varies by product. Sufficient sound pressure (sound intensity) is a key condition.

A 2007 Cochrane review found no evidence that the products then on the market reduced mosquito bites. A later 2021 study at Incheon National University reported reduced approach behavior in Aedes aegypti under high-sound-pressure ultrasound in laboratory conditions. Approach and attempts to land on a human hand decreased, with a tendency toward greater repellency at higher sound pressures.

MOSLOCK was developed from this research through three further years of research and testing to identify suitable frequencies and sound pressures.

MOSLOCK product tests also recorded the following results.

  • SUV + docking tent (June 25, 2025): blood-feeding counts changed from 20 and 18 with the device OFF to 1 and 0 with it ON—a 97.4% reduction based on the two participants' combined counts.
  • SUV interior (August 27–28, 2024): blood-feeding events fell from 20 with the device OFF to 1 with it ON—a 95% reduction.
  • Reverberation chamber (November 4–5, 2024): attraction behavior was suppressed in 10 of 12 mosquitoes, corresponding to 83.3%.

Blood-feeding reduction and suppression of attraction are different measures. These figures were measured under specific conditions; actual effectiveness may vary with mosquito species, space size, ventilation and placement.

How does MOSLOCK work?

MOSLOCK is an ultrasonic mosquito repellent designed to reduce mosquitoes' approach toward people by sending high-output ultrasound in several directions through a rotating head.

Five ultrasonic transducers (speakers) emit sound from a head that rotates 360°, using Multi Sweep to continuously change the frequency.

How does MOSLOCK differ from other ultrasonic repellents?

MOSLOCK is designed to address limitations attributed to earlier products: 'low output'and 'limited coverage'using an ultrasonic repellent design.

Developed through three years of testing with Professor Kwon's team at Incheon National University's Research Institute of Vector-Borne Diseases.

Can MOSLOCK ultrasound kill mosquitoes?

MOSLOCK does not kill mosquitoes. It is a repellent designed to reduce their approach using ultrasound.

Actual repellency may vary with mosquito species, environment and placement.

Do mosquitoes have ears?

Yes. Mosquitoes detect air vibrations and sound with Johnston's organ at the base of their antennae.

Johnston's organ contains densely packed hearing-related neurons and helps mosquitoes detect cues such as a mate's wingbeats. Detected frequencies and responses differ by species, sex and stimulus conditions.

Does it work on every mosquito species?

Responses may vary by mosquito species.

Professor Kwon explains that Culex and Aedes mosquitoes may respond differently because their active times, environments and exoskeletal properties differ.

Research and test results

Development background and test conditions

What research underlies MOSLOCK?

MOSLOCK builds on research into mosquito responses to ultrasound by Professor Hyung Wook Kwon's team at Incheon National University's Research Institute of Vector-Borne Diseases.

In a 2021 paper in the Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology, the team reported that high-sound-pressure ultrasound reduced Aedes aegypti approach and attempts to land on human skin, and changed expression of the CO₂-sensing-related gene AaGr3. MOSLOCK was developed through three years of research and tests involving the institute, automotive sound researchers and MARKT.

Why did earlier studies report no effectiveness?

Earlier studies reported that marketed products did not reduce mosquito bites under actual use conditions.

A 2007 Cochrane review concluded there was no evidence that electronic mosquito repellents reduced bites. Industry explanations such as "mosquitoes avoid bat ultrasound", "they avoid male wingbeat sounds" were also criticized as poorly supported.

In 2021, the Incheon team tested with CO₂ and airflow to more closely resemble host-seeking conditions and observed a significant decrease in mosquito approach under high sound pressure.

Are the results the same in every environment?

No. Results were measured under specified test conditions and can differ in actual use.

Species, mosquito numbers, space size, ventilation, furniture and device placement affect outcomes. Ultrasound travels directionally and weakens with distance or obstructions.

Safety and precautions

Sound, children, pets and electronics

Can people hear MOSLOCK's ultrasound?

MOSLOCK's ultrasound is above the usual human hearing range, but the device as a whole is not silent.

The head's motor may be audible. For a quiet setting, press the button twice to stop rotation (blue LED). If you are sensitive to high-frequency sound or experience discomfort, move away from the device or stop using it.

Can it affect dogs or cats?

Dogs and cats can hear higher frequencies than humans, including part of the ultrasonic range.

Research reports hearing up to about 45 kHz in dogs and 79 kHz in cats. Use caution around pets that respond to ultrasound. If a pet avoids the device or behaves unusually, increase the distance or stop using it.

Can it be used in a room where a baby or child sleeps?

When using MOSLOCK in a child's room, do not place the ultrasonic output directly against or very close to the ears.

Avoid placing it right beside the face or ears and keep it out of reach. Do not let children dismantle the device or put objects in its connector.

Can it affect smartphones or other electronics?

Do not place smartphones or mobile devices immediately beside the operating device. Ultrasound may affect microphones on some devices.

Keep your phone away when making calls, recording or using voice recognition.

Does it use insecticidal chemicals or produce an odor?

No. MOSLOCK is an electronic device that uses ultrasound, not chemical agents.

It leaves no chemical agents or odor in the room and requires no replacement consumables.

What precautions should I follow?

Avoid water, moisture, high temperatures and shocks, and use a Korean KC-certified adapter.

  • Keep the device dry and do not use it in damp locations.
  • Avoid high temperatures, including heaters, direct sun and car interiors in summer.
  • Avoid outdoor use during severe thunderstorms and disconnect the adapter.
  • If there is unusual noise, a burning smell or smoke, unplug immediately and contact support at +82-2-3487-0700.
  • Do not dismantle, modify or repair the device yourself.
  • Keep chemicals away and do not insert sharp objects or foreign matter into the connector.

Placement and spaces

Placement in bedrooms, cars and campsites

What area is MOSLOCK designed for?

MOSLOCK is designed for an area about 3 m in diameter, based on compact spaces such as bedrooms and cars, and is suited to partially enclosed spaces.

Ultrasound travels directionally and weakens with distance, walls or furniture. Layout matters even at the same floor area; in a large living room, place it near where bites occur, such as a bed or sofa.

Where should it go in a bedroom?

Near the head or foot of the bed, without obstructing the front.

Mosquitoes follow exhaled CO₂ and sweat odors and often approach the face and feet. Professor Kwon recommends placement near the head and feet with this behavior in mind.

  • Avoid large furniture or bedding between the device and the person
  • Consider entry routes such as windows and doors
  • Conditions are easier to manage in enclosed spaces such as a bedroom with the door shut
  • Do not place the ultrasonic outlet right beside an ear

Can I use it while camping?

Yes, preferably in a partially enclosed space such as a tent, a car-camping setup or a docking tent.

MOSLOCK was tested in June 2025 in an SUV connected to a docking tent. Effectiveness may be lower in fully open outdoor spaces or strong wind.

  • Keep it inside the tent, protected from rain and dew; do not use it in damp locations.
  • Avoid outdoor use during severe thunderstorms.
  • Use a power supply supporting at least DC 9 V/2 A, including compatible fast chargers. Bring a PD adapter or power bank that supports this output; ordinary power banks must also support DC 9 V/2 A or higher.

Can I use it in a car?

Yes, while the car is occupied or used for car camping. MOSLOCK was tested inside an SUV.

Do not leave the device or adapter in a hot parked car in summer. Operating temperature is −20 °C to 50 °C. Take the device with you when leaving the car.

When should I use rotating or stationary mode?

The speakers do not emit in every direction at once, so the head rotates to help cover shadowed areas. Indoors and in cars, reflections from walls and glass can help sound travel in several directions even without rotation. Use rotating mode outdoors where reflective surfaces are absent.

Use stationary mode when a quieter setting is needed.

Press twice to start the motor (green LED) or stop it (blue LED).

Should I use more than one unit in a large space?

In large or complex spaces, we recommend one unit near each place where people stay.

Ultrasound does not travel far or easily behind furniture. The app can register multiple units and control them individually with names such as Living room MOSLOCK.
